There are various studies currently investigating newly developed treatments for blood clots (including saddle thrombus and arterial thromboembolism) in cats that have shown promising results. We will be updating this page with some of those treatments as they become available.
Research & Studies
An independent research study demonstrated that an enzymatic formula consisting of 30,000FU (1500mg) of Nattokinase and 2000mg of Rutin Bioflavonoid safely dissolved blood clots. 46 cats with aortic thromboemboli (ATE) and resulting partial or full limb paralysis were involved in this research study, and two had circulation and mobility return to their affected limbs within 1-5 hours of treatment. The remaining cats had circulation and mobility return to their affected limbs within 1-14 days of treatment. In all cases, circulation and mobility returned to these cats with no significant side effects.
Another research study from the University of Georgia tested a commonly used human blood thinner, Rivaroxaban, which showed good anti-clotting activity in cats with no adverse side effects. Based on these results, the research group initiated the SUPERCAT Study.
